COMMODORES REPORT

With a fresh season about to start the club has a lot of news.

A new commodore, a new handicap system, a new point scoring system, a new stainless steel frame for the ramp, new requirements for safety and insurance and a new remote anchor winch on the starter's launch.

The last of the above "news items is probably the most important. The anchor winch will be operable from the cabin and will no longer require Bunny, John or anyone to struggle with the anchor from the foredeck, while flying to maintain balance etc. and not spill their drink.

The handicapping system ("3-2-1") will simplify& results and everyone will be able to tell where they stand throughout each race in respect to the other boats.

Safety inspections will be carried out on 6th October and you must contact Dave De Coster to make an appointment. No safety, no start.

Insurance is now mandatory for all craft in affiliated Y.A. races. If you don't have boat insurance with at least $5rnill public risk cover, you need professional (psychiatric) advice. No insurance, no start. Photo copies of current policies are to be lodged with your application for safety certificate. This applies to all entrants in all races, both lasers and yachts.

The new ramp is now 99% complete and we are indebted to Scott Ryrie, who toiled away in his spare time last week to get a coat of decking oil over the entire external deck area.

Other good news to report is that the motor in "Vaucluse" is not in a terminal state of decay and has been resurrected. It should be good for a few more years. Great news, tanks Tinka, Bunny and Ivan.

Boat crew members are constantly sought to complement the regulars. Anyone interested should contact Bob Green, Ian Bell or myself

A working bee is planned for the weekend of 22/23 September. The interior of "Vaucluse" needs a lot of t.l.c. Other tasks planned is the trial of a new external colour to replace the 30 year old "mission brown" which is about as un-nautical a colour as I can imagine. An overall clean-up of the interior and boat shed, reglazing of broken glass etc. are all planned. Please try and make it for a few hours.

Fees are now due. The early payment of your fees is always a help at the start of the season.

The usual Commodore's cocktail session (free piss-up) will be held on 6th October. This is also the RA.N. Centenary celebrations and there will be up to 40 warships milling around the Harbour. Our first race, therefore, is extremely doubtful and in fact at this stage it looks unlikely that a normal race will be possible. Any suggestions for an alternative novelty race will be considered. The harbour will be a sight not to be missed, followed by the mandatory fireworks at about 9.00 pm.

My best wishes for an enjoyable season are extended to all members, especially those with safety certificates and insurance cover.

Yacht Class Report

Welcome to the 2001/2 season!

The just completed Winter Series was well attended with six or seven boats regularly racing in a series of light breezes. Sugee won the handicap division and April Showers won on scratch in a closely contested series.

With thirteen boats expected to compete this summer we should have some close racing. During the winter David Green traded up from his Dart to a Northshore 27 Kariba. This should provide some interesting racing for the champagne set on Peppercorn.

Scott Ryrie has also moved up having replaced his Far 727 with a Pawtucket 35. This boat is a Cole design and should put the wind up Yandoo and April Showers. It should be noted that the Pawtucket is just too high to punch a hole through a 5.5 but apparently Scott decided to get it anyway.

Speaking of 5.5's Baragoola is back in the water after substantial repairs and looking a picture (for the time being) with a fresh coat of blue paint. With his distinguished record in the field her skipper David de Coster was a natural to be elected as our Safety Officer.

All skippers please note that all yachts are required to have a safety certificate inspection to Cat 7 level. An appointment for a safety certificate inspection can be made by phoning David on 0412 332 565. He may be available from 10a.m. to 12 noon at the club on 6 October, prior to the Naval Review. Owners are also reminded to ensure that that insurance is current prior to paying race entry fees.

It looks like a very competitive and enjoyable season coming up and I look forward to seeing you all out on the water.

Good luck and good sailing to all crews

Doug Cameron
Yacht Class Captain

Laser Report

Well the 2001/2002 season is almost here.

Now is the time to get back in the gym (i.e. out of the pub) and dig out all your sailing gear.

Graham Read has passed the heavy burden of keeping our fleet informed onto me but will continue to watch over us - usually from the front of each race.

Bob Green's calculator has broken so he is introducing a simpler points system this year for both scratch and handicap. You will be allocated the same points as where you finish - I point for first. 2 for second etc. - and the boat with the lowest points is the winner.

We are pleased to welcome back Adrian Paul from overseas. Adrian will sailing with us this year.

The Wednesday afternoon club will commence sailing on 3 1 October, after daylight saving starts. Hopefully Peter Richardson will make it back from Tonga to test his new (dry) hull.

If you have any news to share please let me know for inclusion in future editions

See you on the water

Peter Todd
Radial Class Captain

Safety

You will have read in the Commodores Report and also in the Yacht Report that all boats (yachts and Lasers) must conform with safety requirements and have minimum insurance if they want to compete in races conducted by YA affiliated clubs (that means the VYC).

Yachts are required to meet Category 7 standards for racing at this club.

Yacht owners registered with the club will find included with this newsletter an additional sheet detailing The minimum Category 7 requirements. Please bring this sheet to the safety inspection on 6 October and ensure that all requirements are met.

And do not forget your insurance certificate.

New Members

It is pleasing to welcome Ian Lacey back as a member after an absence of a couple of years. Ian was a member of the club for many years and sailed his flood 23 Square One on a regular basis. Ian will be sailing with the Hood fleet this season but hopefully we will see him as part of the VYC competition later in the year.

A welcome also to his crew members Barbra Zussino and Sean Indyk. We look forward to seeing you down at the club at some point during the season.

Damien O'Mara has also joined as a yacht crew member during the winter. Damien has not nominated a boat on his application form and may be looking for a berth. If you are looking for crew contact Rob Nielson and he will give you Damien's number.
