Yacht Class Report It has been an interesting season which has just been completed. Tony de Graaf started the season well in Spirit V but unfortunately his keel parted company with the hull towards the end and he could not continue to embarrass various other fleet members with longer LWL. David de Coster, whose favorite expression is "where do you want the hole in your hull?' is obviously a prophet in his own time because that's how Baragoola finished the season. Yandoo bad propeller problems (it would not fold) and also suffered abysmal navigation at times! Despite these problems in the early part of the season it was the boat to beat. The erratic form shown by Gold Dust suggests that the crew may have mutinied at times under their tyrannical skipper. (You wish - Ed). Doug Cameron in Kapala continued to show how it is done with some superb port tack starts. Rippertune and Sugee both had consistent seasons and both were rewarded with a trophy win. Mio Dio also had an excellent season. With a dedicated skipper of great skill and daring and an experienced crew operating to perfection, this boat provided a flawless display of the art and craft of racing under sail on Sydney Harbour. (Of course some may consider that the foregoing comments are a substantial misrepresentation of reality - Ed). Winter Series The 2001 Winter Series (Van Onselen Trophy) started for the first time on Saturdays and was won on 28 April by April Showers on scratch and Sugee on handicap. Five boats turned up and we had a great time on a blustery day followed by a quiet drink on the skids. Mike Cole |

Laser Report Full Rig Well didn't that season fly by. The highlight of the second half of the season saw a great turnout for the Double Bay challenge. About 40 boats participated, some of which were semi professional, which made the racing all the more exciting. In a fluky southwester, the Double Bay fleet managed 1st and 4th through to 10th in the places counted, with ourselves 2nd and 3rd in the top 10, Mark Bethwaite won the race with myself and Tinker 2nd and 3rd respectively. But alas this was not enough to retain the "Mid Shield". Men, next season we must try harder. With incredible foresight I predicted at the beginning of the season that the Club Championship would be fought out between Tony and Tinker and surprise surprise Tinker has put his name on the trophy again. A great effort. Tony came in second even though he missed two races again a great effort. Full results for the season are set out over the page. Well done to all the winners (and the losers) and I look forward to seeing you at the prize giving night Pat Collins Radial Laser Report The radial fleet varied in numbers during the season with up to 12 boats using the radial rig in some races especially in heavy weather. There was very little difference in boat speed between Bob Green, Ian Bryden, Eitan Kedar and myself. In the end I managed to win the club championship with Bob Green second and Ian Bryden third. Barry Green had a great win in the last heat, which secured him fourth place in the championship. Bob Green once again won the Club pointscore with myself second. It was good to see Peter Todd in third place as he has been improving throughout the season and also had a trophy win - congratulations Peter. Peter Richardson had a great burst of speed before Christmas with Three consecutive wins and as a consequence also had a trophy win. It was also good to see Bob Brady make an occasional appearance towards the end of the season. The dates for the Prize Giving Night and Annual General Meeting are set out in the Commodore's Report. It would be much appreciated if all Laser sailors attended both meetings and we get some new enthusiastic committee members from amongst the Laser ranks for the up coming season. Graham Read |
