3. May 2008 - Commodore’s Report
Congratulations to all the respective skippers and crews who won or placed in the various trophy and champ series. This year has been a very successful one for the club, with the hosting of the Sabot Nationals at Christmas, Heats of the V.S. State Championships, and our now annual Vaucluse Regatta.
Judging by the attendance at the after race debrief at the club, the yachts have had a great year as well with most of the boats winning races. The Laser fleet had a particularly good year with great attendance on Saturdays and also training during the week in the lead up to the World titles at Terrigal. We had nine Lasers attend this great regatta, our best result being ninth in the Masters to our Club Champ Mark Phillips out of a fleet of 110 starters.
Thanks again to all of our starters (Rex, Bunny, Tony, John) and to our Rescue Boat Driver ( Alex ), without them we would definitely be struggling. I urge everyone to attend the prize-giving, as it always is a great fun night.
Regards Ian Bell, Commodore

5. May 2008 - Laser Report
Another closely fought season is over, with it all to play for the last race of the Club championships. We are lucky to have a good contest every week at all levels in the fleets.
I think that the Lasers are as strong as they have ever been in my 10 years at VYC. There is lots of sailing and practicing being done. We regularly had over 20 boats racing and some keen new blood has emerged with “Port Hand” Mark Summerhayes (ask him), David Brown, Shaun and Angus. A drop-off in radial numbers may be due to light air in the last few races forcing radial sailors to adopt the full rig in the later races of the season.
Doubtless the highlight of the season was the Worlds Masters Championship at Terrigal. It was a tough series with incredibly tight racing. Congratulations again to our well deserved Club champion Mark Phillips for a top 10 finish in the Masters Division (45-55 Year Olds). All others performed creditably. A lot of sailing was done outside the Heads in preparation and I think this paid off with Vaucluse boats always showing solid off-wind and up-wind speed in the regatta.
There will be a winter series at Woollahra starting in May and possibly something at Double Bay later in the season. Check the Laser Association website for details.
For next year we will look at some different courses and some sprint races if possible. Full results on our results page.
6. May 2008 - Yacht Report
This year the Club Championship was based on the overall best point score for the season’s racing. The previous Club Championship race was renamed the Vaucluse Trophy. Congratulations to Don Winnacott and crew for taking out both of these summer season trophies. Congratulations also to Mike Cole and crew for persevering in cold and variable winds to take out the winter series. Full results for the season are provided on our race results page.
